Safety management guidelines for Ola drivers

1. Overview

Ola has issued a comprehensive set of safety management guidelines for our drivers to ensure that, as far as reasonably practicable, all drivers who provide transport services to Ola’s customers through its booking platform are aware of, and look after, their own safety and that of their passengers and the public while providing such services.

2. Safety culture

Ola is committed to encouraging and maintaining a good safety culture where our drivers are concerned. A good safety culture incorporates the way in which safety is effectively managed with our drivers, and reflects the attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and values that drivers share in relation to safety.

It is critical that drivers take responsibility of their own driving performance. Dangerous or hazardous driving performance has the potential to place passengers and the public at risk. In the event of any breaches of legal and contractual obligations relating to safety by a driver, Ola has implemented a Driver Sanctions and Reactivation Policy under which all drivers who fail to meet our expectations may receive warning notices and ultimately, be subject to sanction.

3. A Safety management system

A safety management system is an integrated set of work practices and procedures for monitoring and improving the safety of a specific group of individuals. Ola’s safety management system is designed to assist Ola to identify risks, to develop procedures to manage those risks and to enable Ola to encourage all drivers to be aware of their safety responsibilities.

Ola’s safety management system complies with ISO 31000 Risk Management and covers 8 key elements:

  • Policy and commitment
  • Safety responsibilities
  • Risk management
  • Guidelines, procedures and documentation
  • Driver monitoring (including fatigue and drug and alcohol)
  • Driver training
  • Incident management and monitoring
  • Audit and evaluation.

The safety management guidelines contained in this document are part of the safety management system that has been implemented by Ola.

4. Controlling hazards

Ola manages risks relating to driver safety by taking active steps to identify and control all hazards that could cause harm to drivers, passengers or the public. Such hazards can arise from a variety of sources including:

  • Drivers (e.g. driver being unfit to drive due to consumption of alcohol);
  • Passengers (e.g. violent passengers);
  • Public (e.g. pedestrian jaywalking);
  • Operational conditions (e.g. driver fatigue); and
  • Environmental conditions (e.g. torrential rain, snow etc).

Common types of hazards faced by drivers are listed below. Hazards can vary between drivers and documented processes are therefore necessary to identify and manage the different types that may be faced by drivers. In the course of identifying hazards faced by drivers, Ola may do any one or more of the following:

  • formal consultation and communication processes;
  • informal surveys and feedback;
  • incident reports and investigations;
  • audits; and
  • review of industry norms.

The safety management guidelines in this document have been formulated based on the analysis and results of the processes conducted to identify the hazards commonly faced by drivers.
